DONATE LIFE WEEK 2021
DONATE LIFE
WEEK 2021
D
aim being to promote and educate awareness around organ and tissue donation.
The Donate Life Queensland movement offers support and care to donor families as well as welcoming informative discussion around donation.
Organ donation is lifesaving and wait times are between six months to four years.
About 1650 people are currently waiting for a transplant with another 12000 people on dialysis that could benefit from a kidney transplant.
Everyone can become a donor, older Australians, people who smoke, drink, eat unhealthily and even dieters. People aged 16 years and over can register to become an organ and tissue donor in Australia.
Those people that require a transplant range in age and the age vary of ill or dying because of organ failure.
The number of different transplants range from bone, corneal, skin grafting, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
Organ and tissue can transform the lives of many and although the donation rate has doubled in recent years, since COVID-19, numbers have been impacted with a 12% decrease in those receiving a transplant and 16% decrease in donors compared to 2019.
Donate Life Week 2021 needs our help to spread the word about organ and tissue donations and to do this share related content on social media to create awareness. Another option is to either host or attend an organised event. By doing these simple things will put the word out to others regarding organ and tissue donation and registration.
This year Donate Life Week takes a new fresh approach with a more targeted strategy for young Australians, First Nations Peoples and Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
For 2021, Donate Life will be organising a registration race campaign which will showcase encouraging communities to show their importance of organ and tissue registration.
The goal for the campaign is to encourage 100,000 more Australians to register with the Organ Donor Register.
Donate Life Queensland are always in need of volunteers to assist in increasing awareness within our community about organ and tissue donation across Queensland.
This group of people are called Community Champions and make up a variety of different community members like transplant recipients, family members of both donor and recipient families and general community members.
The Community Champions participate in activities and events that are organised across Queensland by holding information displays, community talks along with seeking interviews and opportunities. Donate Life Queensland is always looking for more Community Champions. To find out more, please email: [email protected]
