age to participate in a reading-based fundraiser with the purpose of improving one’s literacy as well as providing community awareness in the region.
The MSA provides support and resources for those that have been diagnosed with MS by assisting to inform and connect those direct with valuable reliable resources. Knowledge is power and we as a community can learn about MS, offer support, and take part in the MS Readathon.
For over 40 years the MS Readathon has been an event that has helped to support an incredible cause. Many schools in the community have been involved in the MS Readathon which inspires children with their literacy by reading as many books as they can throughout the month of August.
The registration process is simple: children can register their school, teachers can register their classrooms or alternatively you can register individually. The MS Readathon has developed a brand-new interactive website with a more modern approach for those children participating by writing book reviews and rating favourite reads.
The funds that are raised from the MS Readathon assists with services such as the MS Family Camps and Family Fun Days. These events allow children who have a parent with MS the opportunity to spend time with their family as well as other families allowing all to bond and share each other’s journeys.
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system. At present there are over 25,000 people in Australia that are currently living with MS. Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease and is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system.
The word “sclerosis” is derived from the Greek word meaning “scars” and these scars appear within the central nervous system.
The Multiple Sclerosis Australia entity has over 60 years’ experience in how to live well with progressive neurological conditions. Unfortunately, the exact reason why this happens is unknown but likely a mixture of genetic and environmental factors are consideration.
Living with MS has each person diagnosed with MS developing patterns in severity and symptoms resulting in an unpredictable disease. While there is no cure for MS, people living with the disease receive treatment which assists in altering and reducing the number of flare-ups.
As a community when members involve themselves in such an important cause it allows for further promoting of awareness and education. When you help raise funds you are making a difference in the lives of those persons living with the disease, their families, and carers.
There are many ways in which the region can contribute for instance volunteering, participating in an MS event or organising an event, donation to MSA, fundraising, or becoming an MS Ambassador. Every contribution is super-charged in importance in allowing further impact in continuing the valuable research for a cure.
