National Pyjama Day

The National Pyjama Foundation will be raising awareness and funding for this year’s National Pyjama Day on July 23.

Since its commencement 14 years ago the foundation has transformed the lives of many children in care.

The National Pyjama Day focuses on supporting children in foster care by ensuring that the life direction for every child in care is changed with literacy, education, life skills and confidence to positively change the direction of their lives.

Over the past 10 years, the number of children that enter foster care who are not based at home has significantly increased.

Reading level at age seven while 75% do not complete year 12 and 33% enter the juvenile justice system.

Due to the significant outcomes with children entering care evidence shows that national benchmarks of literacy and numeracy are not being met along Indigenous educational consequences.

The Pyjama Foundation supports children in care by connecting them with adult mentors through a program called the Love of Learning Program.

These adult mentors are screened trained volunteers, called Pyjama Angels.

They visit a child every week for up to 1.5 hours, and in this time the mentor reads to the child aloud, plays educational games and builds numeracy skills.

The Pyjama Angels help children with their learning while validating to the child that they are valued as a person.

The foundation is committed to providing children in care with empowered values enhancing a child to grow and fulfill their potential.

The aim of National Pyjama Day is to raise much-needed funds and awareness about children in foster care.

By wearing your pyjamas and donating to the foundation on the July 23 you will help the Pyjama Foundation to continue their worthwhile work by offering learning skills to children in need along with funding educational resources.

The donations received will provide the continued needs of every Pyjama Angel mentor who will mentor, encourage, and empower while teaching life skills and literacy.

Why not get your family, friends or work colleagues involved and help make a difference?

To help support awareness in our community, wear your favourite, comfortable pyjamas this year on the July 23 and share a photo or video on the day and tag @thepyjamafoundation, and don’t forget to use the hashtag #InMyPJs and #NationalPyjamaDay.

The team at the foundation is always looking for passionate people who are looking to join as Pyjama Angels to provide one-on-one time for children in care to receive support.
