Bullying Is Not Ok

Bullying Is Not Ok

As schools resume this week in our region, it is important to recognise the signs of bullying and understand its impact. Bullying is not okay and can have long-lasting effects on those who experience it. Many Australian children and young people seek support from specialised organisations to develop coping skills and strategies when faced with bullying.

A question often asked: Why do people bully?

There are several reasons why someone may target another person. These can include jealousy, a desire to be liked, wanting to feel better about themselves, trying to fit in, feeling angry, or wanting control over others.

Bullying takes many forms, including verbal, physical, social, and cyberbullying. Victims may experience name-calling, teasing, threats, and humiliation. In some cases, bullying escalates into physical harm. Other forms include exclusion, lying, and spreading rumours. With the rise of technology, bullying can also occur online through social media platforms such as Facebook. Everyone deserves respect and acceptance for who they are.

There are many organisations available to support young people who are experiencing bullying. One such organisation is Kids Helpline, which provides practical help and emotional support to young people in crisis who need someone to listen.

Kids Helpline offers programs that schools can access to address bullying and promote awareness. The organisation can connect schools and classrooms with qualified counsellors. It also delivers early intervention programs on a range of topics, including bullying, and provides valuable resources for students and teachers. In addition, Kids Helpline offers prevention sessions that are educational, engaging, and age-appropriate. These services are available to primary schools across Australia, with qualified counsellors working directly with schools.

Bullying is an ongoing issue that often goes unnoticed and, in severe cases, can have devastating consequences. Schools, teachers, parents, and students must work together to prevent bullying. Bullying is an unacceptable behaviour, and those responsible must be held accountable for their actions.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and respected in every environment.

Kids Helpline can support anyone experiencing bullying.
