The Lift the Lid Walk for Mental Health is a national initiative hosted by Rotary Clubs across Australia to raise awareness of mental illness. The event raises funds for mental health research through Australian Rotary Health (ARH).
Mental health affects everyone, either directly or indirectly. The walk provides an opportunity for like-minded community members to connect, share experiences, and support one another through meaningful conversations.
Australian Rotary Health is an independent mental health research organisation in Australia. Over the years, it has contributed more than $40 million to mental health research. All funds raised through the event go directly to ARH to support ongoing research initiatives.
The first Walk for Mental Health was the idea of Vicki Stewart, a past president and long-time member of the Rotary Club of Mooloolaba. Her passion for mental health advocacy led to the creation of the event in 2020. Since then, the Lift the Lid Walk for Mental Health campaign has grown significantly and has been adopted by Rotary Clubs across Australia.
Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is a national not-for-profit organisation that supports health research and education across communities nationwide, with a strong focus on mental health.
In Australia, thousands of people of all ages live with mental health conditions. The statistics are confronting, with an estimated eight people dying by suicide each day and an attempted suicide occurring approximately every eight minutes. These figures highlight the urgent need for ongoing mental health research and community education.
The Lift the Lid Walk is not a race, but a community event designed to raise awareness and funds for mental health research. Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young Australians. Research also shows that men are less likely to seek help for mental health concerns than women, and that Indigenous Australians are significantly more likely to experience psychological distress. Community education is essential, and the Lift the Lid Walk promotes positive action toward improving mental health awareness.
Mental health affects every environment, including schools, homes, and workplaces. Breaking down stigma is crucial to encouraging open conversations and fostering a supportive community that prioritises wellbeing.
Those interested in participating can register for the Lift the Lid Walk by visiting www.liftthelidwalk.com.au or by contacting your local Rotary Club.

To be happy and find things that make your heart smile, and you are excited by, is
something that most of us do not even realise we are doing each day.
Our beautiful region has many places to visit and things to do that are beneficial for our soul in our lives.
For some of us it is to appreciate and absorb the simple things that life has to offer.
An area of focus that is worth taking place when a person has an interest or satisfaction this is when ideas are created.
One way of doing this is becoming a member of the Creative Shots Photography Club Inc. They are a not-for-profit club that has shown their club has earned an exciting reputation in the region. They meet the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Jubilee Community Centre.
The club will soon be holding an exhibition of 45 images at the Mackay Regional Council Jubilee Community Centre or visit their Facebook page: Creative Shots Photo Club (Mackay) or Instagram.
Or contact the club if you are keen to be a member of the Creative Shots Photography Club and find a way for yourself to find something beneficial in your life.
Another option to be involved is those in the Mackay Writers Group.
Mackay Writers is an informal free members group that support anyone who wants to try writing. This is a free activity and encourages expression and new writing challenges.
People who want to be creative can attend through Facebook or via email: [email protected]
