Each year in August, Multiple Sclerosis Australia (MSA) runs the MS Readathon. The Readathon encourages people of all ages to participate in a reading-based fundraiser, while improving literacy and providing community awareness across the region.
MSA provides support and resources for those who have been diagnosed with MS by helping to inform and connect individuals with valuable, reliable sources. Knowledge is power, and as a community, we can learn about MS, offer support, and take part in the MS Readathon.
For over 40 years, the MS Readathon has been an event that supports an incredible cause. Many schools in the community have been involved, inspiring children to build their literacy skills by reading as many books as they can throughout August.
The registration process is simple. Children can register through their school, teachers can register their classrooms, or individuals can register independently.
The MS Readathon has developed a brand-new interactive website with a modern approach, allowing children to write book reviews and rate their favourite reads. Funds raised through the MS Readathon assist with services such as MS Family Camps and Family Fun Days. These events provide children with a parent living with MS the opportunity to spend time with their family and connect with other families, allowing everyone to bond and share their journeys.
Multiple Sclerosis Australia has been operating for over 60 years. Their experience in supporting people to live well with progressive neurological conditions is invaluable to those affected by the disease. There are over 25,000 people in Australia currently living with MS. Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease and is the most common condition affecting the central nervous system. The word “sclerosis” is derived from the Greek word meaning “scars”.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of MS remains unknown, though it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Living with MS varies from person to person, with differences in severity and symptoms, making it an unpredictable disease. While there is no cure for MS, treatments are available to help alleviate and reduce the frequency of relapses.
As a community, our involvement in such an important cause helps promote MS awareness. By raising much-needed funds, you are making a difference in the lives of people living with MS, their families, and carers.
There are many ways the community can contribute, including volunteering, participating in MS events, organising fundraisers, donating to MSA, fundraising, or becoming an MS Ambassador. Every contribution is valued and plays an important role in supporting ongoing research toward a cure.
