OSTOMY SUPPORT IN THE MACKAY REGION

OSTOMY SUPPORT IN THE MACKAY REGION

I

N 1960 the Queensland Stoma Association Ltd was formed as a not-for-profit self-help group.

The association was established to offer valuable support,

assistance, and information for people with a “stoma” also called an ostomy, colostomy or urostomy.

A stoma is an opening in the abdominal wall which allows waste to leave the body through the opening of the bowel.

A colostomy or ileostomy is where the colon or small bowel is diverted through a surgically created opening in the abdomen. The waste is then collected in a bag which is attached to the skin.

The more frequently used type is a section of the bowel which is then diverted to the skin surface.

The reason for having a stoma is due to bowel cancer and other long-term illnesses. Jenny and Sam Jeffries.

Both these amazing nurses are affiliated with the Mackay Base Hospital in the Outpatient Department, and they are amazing at their job and highly recommended by clients and families.

These existing stoma nurses provide much needed support and advice. They recommend stoma health checks.

The formation of a stoma is life-changing, and a stoma may be needed for various reasons including medical conditions, injuries and end of life and it gives those the opportunity to continue living a full life.

For some people, a stoma involves medical procedures and allows a new lease on life.

In some cases, it is not a lifesaving procedure.

However, not all ages may require a stoma, while some may be permanent, others are temporary due to medical reasons.

When a child or person is diagnosed, they are eligible to eligible people who are members purchasing affordable appliances through the QLD stoma association. The stoma appliance is covered by the federal government and the scheme is available to children, defence force, police and civilians. The annual fee is $60.00.

There is still some stigma and misunderstanding regarding the subject of stoma, social rules but these things can be improved with compassion, care and respect for each other.

We may feel obvious, we must listen and learn and live life again with support and humour.

In the Mackay we have our own Ostomy Support Group that is for the region.

The group meets on the 4th Friday of every odd month being May, July, September and November.

The Mackay Ostomy Support Group meets at the Gordon White Library on Phillip Street at Mt Pleasant.

They can be contacted via email: [email protected]

or alternatively by emailing: [email protected]

Or phone: 0427 367 803.

The Mackay Stoma Association is there to help those with stomas and their carers and supporters.

We can assist through education and by promoting awareness everyone can live life to its full potential.
