N 1995, when the Gene Therapy Research Unit was established along with The Westmead Children’s Hospital joint venture was formed.

The aim was to conduct the first gene therapy on children with a rare genetic disease in Australia that in collaboration with the Paris Children’s Hospital.

A funding was a priority for this new form of therapy, as well as needing resources for the goal of creating Jeans for Genes was established.

Jeans for Genes Day annual fundraiser is where Australians come together by wearing jeans, which is a unity in the wearing of jeans and making a donation of five dollars for the fight to find cures for children’s genetic diseases.

This important research takes place in Children’s Medical Research Institute which provides solutions to childhood genetic problems such as birth defects, epilepsy, cancer, and a range of syndromes.

Until this week, today, one in 20 children are faced with either a birth defect or genetic disease, with 30% of children’s admissions into hospital being due to genetic disorders.

Each year Jeans for Genes Day raises community awareness along with projects in fundraising space, which provides the Foundation or research with opportunity to be funded so the correct levels of information can be completed.

Everyone who is involved in making a difference by donating is helping those understand and hear about genetic information that research affects.

Everyone is important and researchers are doing their part of the genetic codes to understand what research is done through the screening for diseases by altering DNA.

This year’s Children’s Medical Research Institute focus for those fundraising will help fund the support of the amazing research goals.

Each of the donations from families, local councils, schools or workplaces who raise money, they are helping genetic researchers and scientists to a cure right here in Australia.

There are more than 6000 different genetic diseases that are serious conditions which are sometimes used to help in DNA collection, and research may be rare or unexpected and have no known symptoms in the early years of life.

Jeans for Genes is a great way to take care of all the work by providing more funds for the future of hospitals in Australia.
