National Pyjama Day

National Pyjama Day

The National Pyjama Foundation will be raising awareness and funding for this year’s National Pyjama Day on Friday 23rd July.

Since its commencement 14 years ago the foundation has transformed the lives of many children in care.

The National Pyjama Day focuses on supporting children in foster care by empowering them with critical literacy and life skills to help them break the cycle of disadvantage.

Over the past 10 years, the number of children in out-of-home care in Queensland has increased by over 50%.

Young people in out-of-home care are more likely to have poor education, health, and social outcomes than their peers.

Some of the latest studies have found care staff write about children in care struggle with educational outcomes with 92% below the average reading level at age seven while 75% do not complete year 12 and 35% enter the juvenile justice system.

Due to the significant outcomes with children in care by connecting them with adult mentors through a program called the Love of Learning Program.

These adult mentors are screened and trained volunteers, called Pyjama Angels, visit a child every week for up to 1.5 hours, and in this time the mentors read to the child aloud, play educational games and build confidence with essential skills.

The Pyjama Angels help children with their learning while assisting to build their trust and build a positive routine. The foundation is committed to providing children in care with improved life while enhancing a child’s love for learning.

National Pyjama Day

The National Pyjama Foundation will be raising awareness and funds for this year’s National Pyjama Day on Friday, 23 July.

Since its commencement 14 years ago, the foundation has transformed the lives of many children in care.

National Pyjama Day focuses on supporting children in foster care by empowering them with critical literacy and life skills to help break the cycle of disadvantage.

Over the past 10 years, the number of children in out-of-home care in Queensland has increased by more than 50%.

Young people in out-of-home care are more likely to experience poorer educational, health, and social outcomes than their peers. Recent studies have found that many children in care struggle with educational outcomes, with 92% below the average reading level at age seven, 75% not completing Year 12, and 35% entering the juvenile justice system.

The foundation addresses these challenges by connecting children in care with adult mentors through its Love of Learning Program.

These adult mentors are screened and trained volunteers, known as Pyjama Angels. They visit a child every week for up to 1.5 hours, during which they read aloud, play educational games, and build confidence in essential skills.

Pyjama Angels support children with their learning while helping to build trust and establish positive routines. The foundation is committed to improving the lives of children in care and fostering a lifelong love of learning.

The aim of National Pyjama Day is to raise much-needed funds and awareness for the foundation. Groups, workplaces, and businesses are encouraged to register with the foundation for 23 July, wear their pyjamas on the day, and support this important cause. The foundation has been recognised nationally for its work in early reading intervention and literacy skill development.

It is also involved in early literacy education for those working with children in schools, libraries, and community organisations, as well as anyone supporting children who may experience long-term impacts from disadvantage. Families, friends, and colleagues are encouraged to get involved.

To register, individuals or organisations can sign up, purchase a pair of pyjamas, or share a photo or video in support of the day. Hosting a workplace morning tea is another great way to participate.

Let us come together as a community to support young people in care. You can register today with your business, school, or group and show your support as a team.
